The Pilates Method
What is Pilates?
‘Pilates is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.’ J.Pilates

Pilates is an exercise method that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the late 1800s and throughout the early-mid 1900s.
The method uses a system of exercises on apparatus to retrain and educate your body with the guidance of a comprehensively trained instructor. By achieving optimal alignment and strengthening the deep abdominals and muscles around the spinal column, (the core), you learn to move with control from your centre and develop your body evenly so that you look and feel better. Also, by addressing postural issues and imbalances in the body, pain that has been experienced for years can reduce and often disappear altogether.
A Pilates practitioner stands taller and has greater control of every part of their body, regardless of their level of fitness or activity prior to starting. The result of regular sessions is a stronger, leaner and more balanced body. Greater strength, flexibility and coordination means being in control of your body rather than your body controlling you.
What Happens In A Session?
A typical session is 55 minutes long. You will work closely with the full attention of Nadine who will get you moving on the apparatus, then design the rest of the session as it progresses according to your individual needs. Specific exercises are selected with the whole system in mind in order to address any issues in your body or personal desires you have for your development.
Once you have built core strength and your body is stable, the sessions become more dynamic. The focus is very much on how each exercise is done. When practised with a sound technique and full concentration, the work is deep and a real difference is felt. As the exercises become more familiar, over time you will feel a sense of flow and movement connected to the natural rhythm of your breath.

In Pilates we never increase reps. To deepen the work and build technique we add exercises, so the method never becomes boring. Every part of your body from your fingers to your toes is worked on the apparatus to feel integrated into the centre your body, (your powerhouse).
With regular sessions you will feel taller, ‘pulled together’, stronger from the inside out, and have a spring in your step. Everyday movements will feel easier and enjoyable and, if your endeavour is athletic in the field of sports or the arts, your performance will be enhanced and you will feel much more capable.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness” J.Pilates
